Chairman Frederick Dy and our esteemed Members of the Board of Trustees,

President and CEO Dr Arturo De La Peña,

SLMC Executives

Faculty and Staff,

Alumni and our dear Students.

Good Morning!

Welcome to another academic year at SLMCCM-WHQM!

For those who are returning, I hope you had, although short, a restorative respite. For the First Year Class, we are delighted to have you join us.

At SLMCCM, we have a responsibility to put our passion and skills to work, to maintain the excellence for which the school has created a name. We continue to affirm our mission of educating future physicians and scientists who are,

-Clinically Competent & Ethical

-Academic & Research-oriented

-Collaborative & Patient-centered

-Compassionate & Socially engaged,

through a combination of teaching, research and collaboration with experts in the field of Medical Education.  We endeavor to produce graduates who shall advance the common good, ready to meet the challenges and rewards of practicing the best possible health care in the 21st century.

This is our 26th year as a school. For all our history and our extraordinary resources (the academe and SLMC), what drove progress and sustained vitality is the collective effort of the Lukan Community – Faculty, Students, Staff, Alumni and Friends.  I believe, ours is a unique community which holds great potential to shape the future of Medical Education. We all share a stake in the overall directions of the school and its determination to look forward, always with thoughtful ambition. We pride ourselves to have academic leaders who share a commitment with one another for the success not only of their respective departments, but to the future of SLMCCM as a whole.

As the new academic year begins, there are noteworthy changes in our education landscape. This will be the pivotal year in our efforts at implementing the organized and systematic digital ecosystem. The work we started during the first quarter of the last academic year, allowed our swift shift to ONLINE TEACHING when classes were cancelled because of the Taal Volcano eruptions, and later when the CoVID pandemic forced physical closure of all schools.

We have supplemented our Faculty with experts in the field of Teaching Innovations, Medical Ethics, Clinical Nutrition, Planetary and Global Health, Medical Informatics, Data Science, Community and Population Health, among others.

At this point allow me to share with our students that at SLMCCM, we follow certain principles which reflect our culture and aspirations.

-Teaching not only core competence but also professionalism, compassion and ethical behavior we would like the Lukan graduate to espouse;

-Embracing innovations in teaching and learning utilizing ubiquitous pedagogy while emphasizing communication, teamwork, collaboration including inter-professionalism, because these are the hallmarks of the practice of Medicine;

-Provision of quality care and patient safety through virtual patient encounters via telemedicine and video-assisted clinical rounds and observation of procedural skills, supervised by excellent and committed Faculty who are practicing clinicians in SLMC, Quezon City and Global City; and

-Keeping abreast with the progress in Medicine and, teaching our students to embrace self-development and life-long learning.

In the College, we ensure our students’ learning environment shall continue to be supportive and respectful, learning from the Faculty and their patients, and from each other.

I look forward to a productive blended learning experience in this new norm utilizing StEP-uP, interacting with our amazing and talented students and dedicated and excellent Faculty. The Faculty, our engines of innovation, fostered new approaches and ideas in crafting the better curriculum. This is of a varied mix of teaching and assessment strategies fit to our students’ different learning styles.

Delivery shall be through a modular combination of Faculty-guided and self-directed learning. Being new, this may not be perfect but we shall closely monitor its implementation, assess and recalibrate to make better. Technical help shall be provided to all. Students with extraordinary needs may inform the Office how we may help.

On behalf of the SLMCCM Board of Trustees, our President and the rest of the SLMC Leadership, the Faculty, Staff and Alumni, I look forward to a rewarding year with you.
